"Tokyo Stories" is a solidly satisfying program of live-action and animated shorts by Japanese and Japanese Canadian filmmakers
American-born student filmmaker Chris Eska shot his master's thesis in Japan with a Japanese cast and crew. The resulting 30-minute film, "DokiDoki," shows surprising maturity of craft. The exposition and casting are surehanded. Grainy black-and-white visuals and ambient sound amplify the impromptu, voyeuristic quality of the action. The bittersweet tale follows three strangers who for three years "wait together every morning in the same place, for the same seat, on the same train...never speaking."
